I don't know how many of you scan the Warcry feed on the front page, but one of the articles up there had a pointer to a post on WoW forums detailing some of the changes Blizzard is putting into the Druid cat form. It seems that with 1.7 and 1.8 the dev team will help bring the druid class to be more than a priest-battery on the high-end raids.

It looks like Blizz is increasing the base damage that the form does (but still not making it based on the weapon ) and also adding AGI into the mix for determining AP.

Any thoughts from the Res druids on the new items?

It doesn't sound like too much is being done that will help Imra. I barely use cat form at all anymore. In groups I am expected to heal, which is harder for a Druid than other people think. The HOT spells are nice, but I usually have to stack them to get the job done. If there is more than a couple of people in the group, I am out of mana in a hurry.

Maybe Dhry can suggest a better way to spec Imra or something...

Imra, Orano, Rami

P.S. Imra is lvl 40

I've been paying attention to that news about the next 2 patches.  There is also a big change for Paladins, who will get a ranged DD spell at higher levels that can be used to take out dying runners (good range and mana/dmg, but can only be cast against enemies with <20% health remaining).

It is definitely harder than most people think.

Dhrydan is restoration spec'd so that I have Nature's Swiftness and Innervate. NS is a god-send for serving as primary healer because it allows the follow-up heal spell a second later. Beyond that all I can say is don't use the large HoT (two of those and your mana is toast) unless you have a mage engaging in AoE spells.

When I heal, I have four heal spells on my bar - my largest healing touch and the second one below it (be it rank 5 and 3 or rank 8 and 6, if you get my drift), the highest rejuv that works for the group, then regrowth. If they're getting hit hard, I toss an insta-rejuv and then follow it up with a healing touch - and hope the rejuv HoT helps until the very long druid casting time allows me to get the heal to them.

If I know a mage is going to start taking massive damage from aoe, I toss them a regrowth as the first mob gets to them, then stack a rejuv on top of it. Typically, that keeps them up.

But my largest problem with being healer is aggro. I'm typically healer in pick-up groups, which means horrible aggro-management skills 9 times out of 10. So I'll get three heals off before 1 or 2 mobs peel off the tank and head my way. If no one turns around to help, one of two things happen: 1-I stay in NE form, get another heal or two off - maybe - and die, or 2- I swap into bear form to handle aggro - tank dies - and I get a 'wtf?'. But if a tank can manage aggro properly, being a druid healer is handlable.

Is that different than your experiences?

[I detect a topic drift... :-) ]

That is good to know -- the specifics of how you heal as a druid.  You do a great job swapping back and forth when I group with you.  I feel almost invincible when you are there :-).

It sounds kind of tough being the primary healer as a Druid.  Like you said, it can be done but only if the rest of the group is really on top of things.

As a priest, I use 3 healing spells:

Renew: heal over time, instant cast, approx 900 over 15 secs.

Flash Heal: target heal, 1.5 sec cast, approx 1000 healed.

Prayer of Healing: group heal, 3.0 sec cast, approx 1000 to all party members.

I have a Greater Healing spell that heals like 3000 points at lvl 60, but it is too slow (4 sec cast) and heals too much.  You can't really afford to let someone drop 3000+ hitpoints in any of the high end instances while trying to time a 4 second cast.  Criticals heals using that spell are mostly wasted too.  Most priests don't use that spell anymore at lvl 60.  Casting Flash Heals more often tends to trigger more critical heals.  Critical heals trigger my Holy talent called Inspiration that boosts the target's armor from items by up to 25% for 15 seconds -- a very nice tank supporting talent.

Unless we are fighting something tough like a boss, or taking on multiple mobs, my Renew HOT usually causes someone to hold their ground on their health bar (the spell heals about what the enemy is damaging).  It is very efficient and never pulls agro except on totally untagged mobs.  They will agro me because I am helping their target and nobody else is on their hate list.

Oh, I almost forgot Power Word: Shield.  That is a shield that absorbs around 1000 points of damage and prevents casting interruption from normal damage (not special moves or knockdowns, etc.).  It is not as mana-efficient, so I use it in emergencies because it is instant cast.  I also cast it on mages and warlocks when I see them draw agro.  It gives them another second or two to cast without interruption while I prepare to heal them if necessary.

I have a Holy talent that reduces healing threat by 20%.  When I do pull agro, I have an ability called Fade.  It makes me visually turn sort of transparent.  The effect is that it temporarily dumps an enormous amount of hate with all enemies.  It is very rare that anything is still after me.  The spell lasts 10 seconds, BUT it has a 30 second cooldown.  A big part of managing agro is timing heals and the use of Fade.

If fade is down, I can instant cast a shield on myself and then instant cast a HOT.  I also have the Discipline talents that give me an ability to activate a talent the prevents casting interruption.  As a last ditch effort, Human and Dwarf priests have a racial spell called Desparate Prayer.  It is a mana-free instant self heal on a 30 min. cooldown timer.  It heals me about 2/3 of my health bar.

hehe. I guess I will end my treatise on priest healing now. gotta get back to work

1st, yes I noticed that cat-form seems to be getting a nice DPS buff.  As a warrior, I feel that's good -- bears try to still my job

2nd,  (since we're already far afield), some #s for you healers to consider....

When in my tanking gear with shield out and fortitude buffed, I've got over 4600 health and over 4600 (or is it 6400? i forget) armor.   If my shield's out, I'm probably in defensive stance, which auto-cuts 10% of all taken damage (ganks my damage output by the same) and there's additional reduction in dmg since I have my shield out.

I'm a fairly new lvl 60 -- no epic pieces, still quite a bit of green armor (although I'm migrating to more and more blue).  Tanks who've been around a while will have better armor and (one assumes) health.

Tref; you probably can use your 4 second heal spell on main tanks.  Granted, you'd have to plan quite a bit in advance, and it's not a good idea against bosses, but you can.  Granted, the crit would be wasted (and i love 2000+ point heals )

Dhry; considering how bad your agro issues sound, I now understand why Healer-for-group druids seem to love me when i'm in pickups (rare, but it happens).   I actually maintain agro on stuff despite what you just described (well, if I'm in defensive stance -- healer druids can and do take it from me when i'm playing DPS)
Sabre (80 warrior)
Sceptre (70 warlock)
Thornkiss (80 priest)
Chibi (66 rogue)
and a slew of others, 9 - 53
