I've got a lvl 26 Rogue. I was going for a 21/30 build spec prior to the 2.0 patch. With the new talent trees, does anyone have a good build for leveling? Thanks.

Daggers or Swords? That's a big choice that determines talent paths. Most people recommend some type of combat swords with some assassination sprinkled in for fast leveling. If you want to use daggers, it's a completely different story.

I'm going for a Sword build. I started putting my points in the Assassination path, but wonder if I should start with the Combat path instead. The Combat path seems more defensive at first, but getting Riposte early on seems pretty handy. Does it matter which path I start with? I'm new with this so I'm open to suggestions.

I recommend this for a general Swords leveling build.  It's a Seal Fate/Blade Fury build for Swords.

My personal preference would be to get to Seal Fate in Assassination first. I think you can make a valid argument for Blade Fury. The combat talents and liberal use of Riposte will greatly reduce your downtime eating/bandaging when solo grinding mobs and doing quests.

Seal Fate and the Assassination Tree talents will get you lots of combo points and energy. Quicker combo points give you better control over the solo battles. You can apply finishing moves quicker. Pay close attention to the mobs and what is their weakness. Knowing the mobs and your rogue skills will GREATLY improve your killing efficiency! You learn this over time if you pay attention. There isn’t just 1 way to skin all the cats :-) All the rogue skills can be used very very good in certain situations. One thing I learned is to watch casters and know what they cast (some will heal themselves and they often stand a different way when they are getting ready for that). Using Kicks, Gouges and Kidney Shots to interrupt them makes a huge difference.

Assassination (30 points)
3/3 Improved Eviscerate
5/5 Malice
3/3 Ruthlessness
3/3 Improved Slice and Dice
1/1 Relentless Strikes
1/2 Improved Expose Armor
5/5 Improved Poisons
1/1 Cold Blood
3/3 Improved Kidney Shot
5/5 Seal Fate

Combat (21 points)
2/2 Improved Sinister Strike
3/5 Lightning Reflexes
5/5 Deflection
5/5 Precision
1/1 Riposte
4/5 Dual Wield Specialization
1/1 Blade Flurry

Here's what to do
1. 2 points in Improved Sinister Strike no matter what (great talent)
2. Pick either the Combat Tree or the Assassination Tree and go all the way down to the stopping point and then work down the other.

Here is my recommendation on the order to take talents in this template:

Combat Tree order (after 2 points in Imp SS):
1. 3 points in Lightning Reflexes
2. 5 points in Deflection
3. 1 point in Riposte
4. 5 points in Precision
5. 4 points in Duel Wield
6. 1 point in Blade Fury

Assassination Tree (after 2 points in Imp SS):
1. 5 points in Malice
2. 3 points in Improved Eviscerate
3. 3 points in Ruthlessness
4. 1 point in Relentless Strikes
5. 3 points in Improved Slice and Dice
6. 5 points in Improved Poisons
7. 1 point Cold Blood
8. 3 points Improved Kidney Shot
9. 1 point in Expose Armor (just a filler somewhere to get 25 points)
10. 5 points in Seal Fate

Yeah, thanks Tref! What would you recommend for daggers ? And are there any builds that work with both swords and daggers?

Daggers…

Swords is a play style that is straight forward. You open up on a mob and then mostly stand there trying to pump out a steady stream of DPS while avoiding damage to yourself.

Daggers is the opposite. IMO you should be dancing around and maneuvering a lot. If nothing else, most of your primary damage requires you to get behind the enemy. The PVE mobs always try to face you, so that is why you are dancing around. You focus on controlling the mob and doing big bursts of damage.

For a daggers build, you want to look for as many talents as possible that increase the special attacks which require a dagger in the main hand -- mostly Ambush and Backstab.

The classic level 60 PVE dagger template is 21/8/22. The key points are Cold Blood in Assassination (a 21 point talent), Improved Backstab in the Combat Tree (requires 8 points to get there), and your favorite talents in Subtlety up to Preparation (a 21 point talent). There’s basically 1 floater point. PLEASE NOTE: The dynamics of this template will change slightly when TBC is released and they swap which trees you find Improved Backstab and Improved Slice and Dice. Blizzard currently plans to basically swap the positions of these two talents (which is cheered by most, especially dagger rogues).

Here is a pretty solid PVE-oriented 21/8/22 Dagger Template. You can mix and match talents to make it a little more PvP friendly or if something else in the tree is better for your personal play style. The essential talents that define this “cookie cutter” template are Cold Blood, Improved Backstab and Preparation. You have to get to those key talents by taken some path to get there. You also want to take all the talents that boost Ambush, Backstab and attacks that happen from behind the enemy.

Note: If you don’t have Blade Fury from the Combat Tree, it’s pretty important to get Improved Sap in my opinion from Subtlety for PVE grinding. You want to have a way of sometimes dealing with more than 1 mob. Improved Sap let’s you CC one while take down the other. Blade Fury with Slice N Dice, Evasion and Ghostly Strike allows you to just pummel them both at the same time while minimizing damage to yourself.

Assassination (21 points)
3/3 Improved Eviscerate
5/5 Malice
3/3 Ruthlessness
3/3 Improved Slice and Dice
1/1 Relentless Strikes
5/5 Lethality
1/1 Cold Blood

Combat (8 points)
3/3 Improved Gouge
2/2 Improved Sinister Strike
3/3 Improved Backstab

Subtlety (22 points)
1/5 Master of Deception
5/5 Opportunity
2/2 Sleight of Hand
2/2 Elusiveness
3/3 Initiative
1/1 Ghostly Strike
3/3 Improved Ambush
3/3 Improved Sap
1/1 Preparation
1/2 Dirty Deeds

Classic ways of working Daggers is to open up with an attack from Stealth (Ambush = more damage, Cheapshot = stun and more combo points), and then constantly work the mob with CC so you can get behind them for a Backstab (which very often Critical). You use Gouge whenever the cooldown is up to freeze the mob in place, and then move around for the Backstab. You can also use the Kidney Shot finisher to stun them and get a Backstab. You have to time the energy correctly.
