Alright, I've gotten a question or 3 about Rogue Specs and some tips and tricks...I'm NOT a rogue expert, but this is what I've found, as a Combat and an Assassination/Combat hybrid:

General Tips

-Evasion is your friend during an add-tacular situation.
-If Evasion isn't gonna work...Vanish before you die, vanish in a buggy situation but do NOT vanish just because.  You never know when you need to vanish.
-ALWAYS make sure to stock up on Flash Powder.
-Regularly Pickpocket baddies if you can, the cash helps to pay for mounts and repairs.
-DON'T forget to poison your weapons, I've found as a combat rogue that instant poison is nice...but Mutilate rogues LOVE deadly poison and a few others.

Opening Moves

As a sword rogue...I'm a bit restricted on my opening attacks available in stealth...so I either a)Cheap Shot if the baddie can be stunned or b)Garrote if the enemy cannot be stunned.  If you're going for speedy, pure DPS attacks as combat...just hit em with another sinister strike.

Rogues using daggers can open with a backstab, an ambush or a mutilate in addition to the other two openers I've already talked about.  It all depends on the situation, but I'd suggest opening with whatever does the most damage unless you're in a group environment.

Finishing Moves

I use one of two Finishing moves regularly.  Here are my tactics with each.

-Rupture is used when I don't want a massive aggro spike, or when I know an enemy has Crowd-Control abilities that I cannot escape and I STILL want it dead.

-Eviscerate is used for just about every other situation, if I want it dead and dead RIGHT NOW...Eviscerate+Cold Blooded for a 100% critical hit chance is a must, just do NOT use it in a group setting, you will gain aggro, get pounded on and probably die.

I don't know much about the other finishing moves and I NEVER use them, so I'll let someone else talk about that.

Stat choices on items

Rogues should focus on 3 stats in my opinion.
-Agility
-Attack Power
-Stamina

In that order, and items "Of the Bandit" are essentially perfect for it from 57-69 situations.  Critical Strike rating items and dodge ratings, etc. just use up valuable space that the Agility could replace, so too many points are allocated to get the same end result.  If you can't get "Of the bandit" items...get "of the Monkey" items.  But absolutely focus on Of the Bandit or Thick Draenic leather items once you head into Outland.  Hit rating may be important for end-game...but I'm not there yet and the combat tree gives me a 5% hit rating increase anyway.

As far as weapons go...the slowest item you can find with the highest damage and DPS is best for your main-hand.  For your off-hand item, go for something quicker.  I don't know how that translates into pure talent builds, but I find that my very slow 1-hand sword is rather nice.  Also, watch out for "occurs on hit" items as they aren't always as good as pure stats on a weapon.

Enchants

For enchants on items...I've found that +Attack Power on Gloves and Bracers works well, and is relatively inexpensive.  For all other points on the body...just buy knothide leather armor kits for less than 3g each and you get +8 to stamina...which is functionally 80 hit points.  On weapons, go for whatever you can afford to put on them, but I just go with the inexpensive "Of Striking" enchants because they were the least difficult for me to pay for (I have an enchanter, so supplies were easy to come by.)  A lot of people swear by Fiery at low levels, then +15 agility or Mongoose for high end items...but I haven't got the cash for those things or the uber end-game stuff.

So, there you have it, this is the start of a discussion on how to make rogues work most effectively.

When in doubt...hit something as hard as possible.

Shut up and Reboot.

Weapons: Slow Main Hand (2.00 or slower) and Fast Off Hand (1.70 or faster) =P - same thing for daggers, except both weapons are in the 1.00s.
Stack AP for the increased white damage output.

Slice and Dice should be your bread and butter as combat - every 3 combo points when it finishes, it generates more DPS then a 5 point eviscerate usually. Eviscerate is pretty unreliable being that it seems to crit on the low side for my rogue.
O.o And I thought I had forgotten all of this stuff!

Agreed on stats for PVE.

Primary Stats for PvP:
1. Stamina (shoot for 9.5K or more hit points at level 70)
2. Resilience (shoot for 300+)
3. Agility or Attack Power (as much as you can get after items 1 and 2 goals are met)

Agreed on Slice N Dice. That should always be active in dungeon PvE. Any damage tracking mod will tell you that 50% to 60% or more of the total damage a rogue does is "white damage," the damage you do with just plain auto-attack. Slice N Dice boosts that by 30%. Nothing beats it over time.

Slice N Dice isn't that important when solo killing non-elite mobs. They'll be dead too fast to make it worth while. I usually do more CC (cheap shot, gouge, kidney shot) to avoid taking damage and having down time.

If you are 41 points in Assassination (Mutilate), a cold blood + mutilate is better than cold blood + eviscerate. CB+Mut does the same or more damage and GIVES you 3 combo points. CB+Evisc does slightly less and USES all remaining combo points. I only Eviscerate with leftover combo points that I can't use to keep up SnD or Rupture.

Using an off-hand weapon that is 1.5 speed or faster will give you a Shiv that only uses 35 or less energy. That's a great substitute for the old Hemorage rapid combo point building attack without having to put any points into Subtlety to get Hemorage.

Cheap Shot can mess up multi-mob pulls in dungeons. Warriors need to get beat on a little bit early in the fight to generate the rage they need for aggro control. It can also stun the mob in a bad place. Ambush generates a big burst of aggro too, so I usually Garrote from stealth on the first mob.

www.shadowpanther.net is an excellent site to research gear for rogues. I highy recommend it if you want to be serious about your rogue-ing.

This may seem a bit impertinent of me, writing here, as I my application for guild membership is still under consideration, however I have a rogue question that you may be able to assist me with.

I have a level 58 rogue in another place (Dranall - on Nagrand) who is having great difficulty finding any level-appropriate daggers. He presently uses 'Widowmaker' with the fiery enhancement in his main hand, and the 'Vorpal of Power' in his off-hand. Both are low to mid 40's weapons. They have served him well over the time. His build is heading for Mutlilate in Assassination, but has Subtlety down to fullup Improved Ambush and fullup Camouflage, (interesting as I don't like PvP - not very good at it, but love the sneaking-about build, and in stealth being able to move as fast as a draenei normally runs :-) ).

I am worried that my weapons are now becoming under-powered for my level, and I have yet to go to OL as a result. Should I look at getting at least a main-hand sword with more 'oomph' (if not both hands) fo rmy out-of-stealth activity, or are there daggers about that would meet my concerns.

I use the itemrack addon, so have a great 'event' that allows me to automatically switch to a sword option when out of stealth, and then go daggers when in stealth.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Chukotae;

Welcome to the outlands. Don't worry about your weapons; your weapon concerns will soon be eased.  It's "upgrade to outland gear" time!

Sabre (70 warrior)
Sceptre (70 warlock)
Thornkiss (70 priest)
Chibi (62 rogue)
and a slew of others, 9 - 53

At level 58, you are at the exact level to start using the low-end, green drops from outlands.  Check the auction house for level 58 daggers.  You might very well find some cheap upgrades.  Look for some with Agility and/or Attack Power.

As soon as you get to outlands, do all the Hellfire Peninsula quests -- All of them.  That zone IMO is designed to get you geared up quickly and ditch all the old Azeroth gear.  There are some good daggers in HFP quests.

Another suggestion for what it's worth:  If you like daggers and the sneaky play style, and are planning to hit Mutilate eventually, I would recommend a talent respec and putting 41 points in Assassination *now* to get mutilate.  Then put the rest in Subtlety and work down that tree as you continue leveling up.

I think that would probably help you level faster.
