I have a question i would like some help with. I currently have Alchemy/Herbalism  for professions. I am not really happy with either and am considering changing to mining and blacksmithing.
At my level would this be a wise thing to do?
Any and all opinions are welcome.
Thanks,
Garrok

Hey Garrok,

Just a heads up.... whenever you are looking into a profession I would say keep a few things in mind. One, do you want to make money with your profession and two do you actually want to utilize your profession to bennefit your character?

I am and 300 armorsmith/miner and there are very few items that I would actually make to wear. Also, I can't remember ever selling anything to anyone for a profit.

However, my other toon is a 300 herbalist and I make tons o cash on the AH selling weeds and honestly at the end game I find that I can never have enough potions.

yea I agree,  depends on what you want to do with your profession.  But you can change professions anytime no matter your level.
I never make money with leatherworking but enjoy making stuff for people that need it.  Whereas Aragoth with 300 alch makes tons of money on the AH, picking flowers and selling pots.  Plus he keeps us in the potions for raiding.

I have to agree on the Alch/Herb combo. It is hands-down the most practical combination in the game. By practical I mean that you can make money AND you can make a lot of items that your character and others will actually use.

I made my Rogue character (Trefal) and leveled him up for the sole purpose of having a toon that could make me money. My priest main character does not solo or farm good at all, so I need a source of income. I switched my rogue from Mining back to Herbalism again (he was originally herbalsim) because I just didn't feel like I was collecting as much. Arcane Crystals are the big thing to sell as a miner, and it is really hard to find them and beat professional farmers to the spawns.

Herbs always sell and are always used. It's basic economics. The main production professions make big-ticket items that are one-time sales. Alchemy makes consumables. Consumables created a never ending supply of repeat sales. Endgame raiders use lots of potions!

On the other hand, my paladin character is a Blacksmith (Armorsmith) / Miner. I don't expect to ever make back all the money I sunk into this. It doesn't matter though. I simply enjoy armorsmithing. The game is about having fun and I like doing that. It's like Ceza said with leatherworking. She doesn't make a profit, but she enjoys making things for people. That is fine, but these professions are HUGE cash sinks. I would never put anything into a profession like that until after you have your first level 60 character on a server.

I would like to thank you all for contributing your opinions on this subject and have decided to stay where i am.
I am going to take a note from Tref and let my paladin do the blacksmithing.
Again thank you all for the input. Its nice to have a forum to get help on things like this for the (as molt put it)
casual gamer.

For what it's worth, I started with Alc/Herb and then decided to switch over to mining and engineering.  After I maxed out with mining and engineer, I decided to go back.  Engineering was great and I enjoyed it ... some nice and fun gadgets to play with but overall, I found myself (as a priest) in more need of pots than anything else.

Tragic the Night Elf Priest (lvl 60) and a few others too!

Here is my advice
Pick what ever profession suits you for your character Tailoring enchanting, Smithing, Leatherworking, Whatever.
2nd profession Herbalism.

Heres why herbalism and alchemy are a high rate of consumption very consumables so Herbs will always sell well potions can still be profitable if you gather your own herbs but buying herbs to make them gets expensive quick. You can usually find the potions you need for significantly less then material needed to make them.
So herbalism is your money maker you use the profits to buy the material for primary crafting proffesions.
Ask anybody that has done the Thorium brotherhood quests and ask them if they bought the majority of their mats or harvested them. I'm betting on bought because you litterly need hundreds upon hundredes of thorium bars to make the stuff to advance it.

My other reason for this recomendation is very simple you have a large friendly guild that support each other. You provide the mats and we'll make it far cheaper or free depending on what you request. I say cheaper because if you want someone to make you 150 poitions or sharpening stones even if you provide the mats thats a good chunk of time offer to tip them most will refuse some won't but it is polite they arn't your servant.

So if you specialize in something like leatherworking you can provide an invaluble service to guild members because you can get epic recipies for your trade skills but by keeping herbalism you can keep a healthy infusion of gold for yourself to keep you character viable.

If you have an alt then make it a gather you can provide the mats and people can provide the product. That way you can get some really good stuff and other guild members get to use those epic recipes more then once or twice

Cheers
