Well, appropriateness is not determined by people OF that age, it's determined by adults FOR people of that age. Lot's of teeneagers think R rated movies should be fine for them, but I think lot's of parents would disagree. :p
When I was 15, my mom would have had a heart attack if I saw that video clip. But times change...who knows, lol.
Anyway, it WAS funny :p

Lot's of teeneagers think R rated movies should be fine for them, but I think lot's of parents would disagree. I agree on one level, but would have to agree to disagree on whether some parents should have the issue that they do.
But then - I was watching R rated movies with my parents since the age of 10 or 11-ish. And, I grew up with horror B-movies since about 7 (Basketcase, CHUD, Phantasm, and Puppetmaster, anyone?). But then, I fear I might be making a point in your favor by discussing these points. |

I usually go by this: "Would I say it in guild chat?" "Would I upset other guildies?"
If that's the case, I usually don't post it- if I deem it 'borderline' I might tag the topic with a caution...
As an example: I made a comment on vent last night about aborted fetuses being smarter that a particular player... it's gross and disgusting but I said it in vent with people I knew wouldn't get upset. Would I type that in guild chat? No. I find humor in odd areas- mostly race/religion/sex/overly-gross areas of life. It's me and a censor myself quite a bit, I do it out of curtesy for others that might not appreciate it.
This is how we coexist with each other; by finding a happy medium (PG if you will) and being tolerant of others. If you want to share something that might be a little 'different' make sure people know what they are about to see might not be something they want or need to see.
Then again, the interweb is a very big and can be a disgusting place; our guild website is not a place for the disgusting areas of it to lay rest. |

Right...I like the idea, not practical until a person has the capacity to make decisions that determine state of mind. That age depends on the person. For a an 8 year old, well, it's a nice thought. Sometimes I think you guys like to twist the topic around and argue off-topic points just for fun :p I'm liberal, so this doesn't bother me in the slightest, and I'd let my
kids view and experience things most parents wouldn't earlier. But I
was talking about how society works. Legal-wise. If you want to
change it to an idealogical or philisophical conversation, that's a
whole different ballgame. Int he meantime, in most countries, adult
make the rules about what is appropriate for underage people (different
ages in different countries and cultures, rarely younger than 14).
Weather the government should legislate such blanket ages, or if 8year
old are harmed by such exposure wasn't part of the original
discussion. But if you guys want to hijak this topic with the giant
bald head, have fun!

Int he meantime, in most countries, adult make the rules about what is appropriate for underage people And I would even further qualify this as the adult ideology in power makes the rules.
(Damn - feels like a scene out of the 'Life of Brian' - huzzah for Robert's Rules).
Weather [sic] the government should legislate such blanket ages, or if 8year old are harmed by such exposure wasn't part of the original discussion. But if you guys want to hijak this topic with the giant bald head, have fun! Appropriateness for the forum was the original topic, which is what caused the slipperly slope into 'appropriateness in general' discussion. And you know we're always happy to hijack almost anything! I'm just glad it's a Tref head and not a Chuck Norris head.
And, BTW, Jureal - there was a lot of discussion in your post, but I missed the point - what was your thesis or topic statement in that thing? Seemed like a lot of mental masturbation without climax (so was that inappropriate? ). |

I think it is fine if people post a link that might have borderline questionable content and label it clearly that way.
I'm sorry if I confused anyone with my cryptic one-liner. Rikuu has commented about appropriateness a few times and mentioned that it must be fine with everyone else because it is ok with him and he is the youngest person. It's an argument that is very common -- if you are a certain age, such as the "legal adult" age in whatever culture you live, anything goes. All becomes permissible.
On the contrary, things are or are not appropriate regardless of one's age. Most things are anyway. Is it acceptable for an adult to use degrading language in everyday speech but just not for a child because they are too young? Is it acceptable for an adult to drink themselves into unconsciousness just because there is no law against it, and it is not appropriate for a child just because of an age-factor? Those are overly simple examples, but they get to my point.
So I mostly meant that “appropriate” was defined by your beliefs and not your age. I hope it did not come across as condoning inappropriate things for people who are too young and immature. Mature is not defined by the large amount of “inappropriate” things you can consume and experience. To me, that is the opposite of maturity (please not the strong emphasis that this is my own opinion).
And I agree with Aroura 100%. Adults make the rules for children.

I can sum my post up for you:
Use common sense and don't be an idiot. Don't post BS, retarded crap that's overly gross/offensive; use your judgement. Let people know what what's on the other side of that link before they hit the button if it might be offensive.
Yeah you might have to censor yourself a bit, but that's how we all coexist so easily on these forums and in-game. |
