God I'm glad I don't have Verizon, listen to this guy trying to teach the customer service reps basic math for 20 minutes.

Although he's completely and oh so obviously correct, he really explained it badly! He just needed to say that .002 when multiplied by a whole number (his kb) is always assumed in dollars, since it's the whole number (1). Cents itself a decimal (0.01), you have to move the decimal in the finished figure to convert it to cents. Or, you can't multiply the kb as whole numbers, but as the decimal point (.01) so you have to move the decimal point in kb up 2 spaces to translate it into pennies. Well, maybe they wouldn't have understood that either, lol. He also says more than once that they are quoting him dollars as if they are cents, he means they are quoting him cents as if they are dollars. Or maybe they were doing both depending on which idiot he was talking to. Scary
But in any case, wow. 2 people for sure, and apparently a few before the ones we heard that can't do math. Hurray for the US public school system! rofl

actually, these were probably Canadian customer service agents....at least I got the impression he was calling from Canada.
Also, he could have just said that they weren't converting from cents to dollars, or explained that .002 cents is 0.00002 dollars, and had them do the equation with that amount. |

True about the explanation. I still don't think they would have understood it though, lol. I had the impression he was home, got the bill like a month later, and was calling from the USA then. In either case...not great for education in general :p
It looks like he got a refund of the charges, all in a single day, due to the public response to this. Nothe the first e-mail he received, where they continued to argue the rate, before someone finally understood it, and credited him: http://verizonmath.blogspot.com/2006/12/response-from-verizon-100-refund.html
Sill, I can't decide if it's really funny or really sad :p

| Listening to that seriously made my brain hurt, especially being such a math nerd myself. |
