And if you can understand this chart and/or find it funny, you probably have a place on the chart too. :-)

You could argue that people who fit in boxes higher up the chart are in actuality more geeky.  They just *consider* themselves superior to the other geeks farther down the chain :-)

I'd agreed that SCA people are more geeky than Ren Fair folk.  SCA is a higher level of dedication and precision within the craft :-)

The odd situation here is though, I'd pit any SCA person against any Ren Fair
folk any day in a fight to the death.

I'm mildly confused by "consider themselves less geeky than" in this context.  Is geeky here considered good or bad?  I mean, using the term "Japanimation" is clearly a boneheaded mistake, and in circles where "geek" could accurately be applied, users of this term would not be worthy of the term.  They're not geeks, they're poser geeks, and that's so very much worse.

While I'm not a fan of fanfic, I have to say that well-written fanfic (true to character, requiring higher levels of geekdom, and well-written, requiring higher levels of education/intelligence) is far better and far more geeky than erotic Mary Sue fanfic, which can be produced by a programmed generator

It's kind of sad that I can even have this conversation...

...but dub fans are losers.

;-)

Hey, didja notice that cosplayers don't even make the list?!

I'm not sure there's too much of a difference here if the dub is good quality and stays true to the story. Plus, do you REALLY need to hear the high-pitched squels of excitement almost every female anime lead tends to emit?

And, to be honest, you miss a lot of the show when you're too busy concentrating on the subtitles - I just have more time to appreciate the...qualities...of the stars.

Personally, I prefer some subs and some dubs, depending on the voice actors, the quality of the work, and how true it stays to the story.

I think they need a double-arrow line from these folks to the people doing live-action RPGs.

BTW - I do have an authentic heron-marked sword replica!

Whee!  I created a subs vs. dubs debate in a totally neutral environment!

Posted By Dhrydan on 01/29/2007 4:17 PM

Personally, I prefer some subs and some dubs, depending on the voice actors, the quality of the work, and how true it stays to the story.
Well, I tend to watch non-squealing shows, mostly, so that's not much of an issue for me.  Actually, I find far more dubs with truly annoying vocal quality (Lisa Ortiz, anyone?).  Check out Gankutsuou for one example.  We trade Japanese Albert, young but educated, for American Albert, who pops out, "Gee, Count, that's swell!"  Ouch.  And the pronunciation stinks -- the Count of Monnie Cristo? like the sandwich? -- and they flubbed the English translation straight from the French.  Sheesh.

As far as "good quality" dubs, maybe I just have a really high bar for "good quality;" I've watched exactly one dub which I liked.  Crispin Freeman just sets my teeth on edge, and he's in most of the dubs of my favorites.  :-)

And for some reason, many American companies feel a need to rewrite the scripts from the original.  Watch Orphen with English language and subtitles both on, and take a drink every time they match.  You'll be thirsty.  (Okay, Orphen wasn't great to start with!  But still, a translator's job is to translate, not to re-invent....)

I admit some subtitles, especially from older releases, are ugly and detract from the picture (ex. old Slayers release, with gaudy yellow subs).  But that's far from ideal.  And since Crispin is in that dub, too, I'll take the gaudy yellow subs.  ;-)

I am *not* an American basher, as some faddish folks are.  I've just always been picky about languages and translations, from long, long before my anime days.  Personal peeve, I guess.

(And -- Sabre, go somewhere else for a minute -- who in their right mind would trade Nakata Jouji's sexy rumble for Jamieson Price's anemic interpretation?  No, thank you!)

Drat. I have a half dozen or more real bladed weapons ("real" here meaning carbon steel, not, as one zealous salesman tried to sell me, "surgical steel"), but I just remembered that I do have an enormous replica of Sephiroth's long sword, too.... Guilty.

But at least it's carbon steel, not stainless. That redeems me. Yeah. ;-)

I too believe in the Subs are better than Dubs line of thinking. Though I have NO IDEA what any of the shows Shinteetah mentioned are =P

I find that in recent anime dubs they always find some way to spoil a future plot line(last week in Bleach they said the name of Ichigo's sword long before it was ever revealed in the original Japanese) or censor it it in some way (in One Piece one of the characters smokes in the Japanese version, in the English sub his cigarette is conveniently a lolly pop) or they simply make the charatcers overly annoying or give them catch phrases that they use WAY too much ("Believe It!" from the Naruto Dub).

Now granted, there are a few dubs out there that are good quality. I enjoyed the Gundam series in English, and Dragon Ball for the most part(though they did alot of editting). But I refuse to watch anything dubbed by 4Kids, they are just way too extreme when it comes to censoring. Why does a company, admittedly targeting children, choose to dub an anime targetted for teens and young adults?
