I was browsing some blogs when I came across a reference from a few weeks ago to Tim O'Reilly's blog where he proposed a Blogger's Code of Conduct.

I initially thought "well, that's total BS" - but I read through the comments for a while, and also was discussing the topic with my wife for a bit. I have to say the concept is intriguing. I think the icons/badges are a total waste, but I do think it would be a great idea to require blogs to post a Code of Conduct policy similar to the ubiquitous 'Privacy Policy' link everyone has.

In many ways, a couple rotten apples really can spoil the whole pile - and it isn't a bad idea to say 'I reserve the right to delete your comments if...'.

Anyone have thoughts on the topic?

I didn't have time to read the link, but I heard about this on the news back when it was a brief news blip. I think it is a good idea and a nice standard as long as it is voluntary and not actually defined. By that I mean that as a standard, bloggers post *their* policy. The policy could be anything they want -- in order to shape their blog the way they want.

I don't have a problem with someone who runs a blog and openly states that they will do X, Y and Z in order to achieve a certain "feel" or integrity to the discussion. If they say it up front and openly, everyone knows the rules and can participate if they chose.
