Dhry, I could use your help with something.
I'm running WoW on a Dell XPS 410 with Vista (Intel Core 2 Duo, E6600, with an nVidia GeForce 7900GS GPU) and I don't have any serious issues, except for one thing.
Ever since I started playing on this machine, I've noticed that it is unable to render certain "fill" patterns -- the two that come to mind immediately, that I've seen, are:
-- the lava pools in Burning Steppes -- the crystal hulls on Tempest Keep
I suspect this is a Vista issue, because I updated my video driver recently to a driver dated 9/11/07, and the problem persists. Instead of rendering the patterns (I know what the lava is supposed to look like, but didn't get to Netherstorm until 2 months after getting Vista) they just show up as flat black. It's almost as if something is being "zeroed out" or "turned off" in the rendering engine and those areas are being left "dark". I'm wondering if it's something involved with any "hand-off" that occurs between Vista and the GPU, since this did get past the driver update.
Would appreciate any tips or advice you can offer on this; it isn't really *major*, it's mostly cosmetic, but it would be nice to see those parts of the game as they were meant to appear. I do have my video settings "cranked", btw, at 1280x800 widescreen; but it seems to handle that well, with no problems; I consistently get 45-60 fps pretty much anywhere, except in Shat, where it dips into the 30s.
Thanks again,
Pinky

I would venture a guess that it's one of two things: - The Vista driver that nVidia is providing to you - The WoW installation I don't think that it's the operating system, per se, because it would be a universal issue. That being said, there is always the strong possibility that nVidia didn't do something right with the driver (I've personally given up on nVidia cards due to poor quality video drivers...having enjoyed ATI cards over the nVidia for performance and stability). If you could, I would try and grab another video card (perhaps borrow one from a friend) and see if the patterns show up. Otherwise, I would post on Blizzard's forum or send them an e-mail and inquire if there are any known issues with that hardware/OS combination. But I'm not a hardware/driver wiz...if you were having an issue with SharePoint or Office, I might be of help. ;) But that's my thoughts - I run WoW on several different Vista machines, and my brother's been running it for a bit - and I haven't seen this particular issue at the OS level. Did you look about on the Blizz forums? |

Yeah I checked on the Blizz forums, and what they suggested there was to turn off textured highlights and/or smooth shading; tried both, as well as others, and neither worked.
I'd have to say I'm in agreement with you on nVidia though. Was running with an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro on my old XP machine, and didn't have this issue there. Kind of odd, considering that (according to what I heard 3 years ago) WoW was written for nVidia cards/drivers, as opposed to ATI. Again, it's not game-*breaking*, but it's something that would certainly look better as intended.

You know nvidia always worked wonders for me vs. ATI before Vista... maybe Nvidia has had trouble getting their cards Vista compliant. I've always had much better luck with Nvidia than the ATI cards that always seemed to cause much more trouble where I was concerned. Time to keep watching this and see where it ends up. |

Pink - any chance you still have your ATI card around? You should try popping it in. Otherwise, maybe send an e-mail to nVidia? They should be quick and committed to responding on the topic. At worst, they should be able to point you to beta drivers for your card (which is what I'm running on my nVidia machines - it was something Sony had started me on when I was running a Vaio 4 years ago). Kemel - For my personal experience, the driver issues go back as far as Windows 2000. Again- personally - I've had exactly the opposite experience on laptop computers (especially with the GeForce line - their OEM driver release model completely stinks), with completely mixed results on desktops (favoring the ATIs)...I swore off nVidia cards about 2-3 years ago...which is unfortunate, because I really prefer the nVidia website, marketing, naming, and UX (user experience, for those TLA challenged). But ATI has always yielded less issues with DAoC and WoW - everything else has been matching experience. |
