It's interesting reading.  Apparently one farm pays people about $75 a month for 12 hours per day farming shifts.  After reading the article, I have mixed feelings about the whole thing.  On one hand, it sure seems like you are encouraging "sweathshop" businesses by purchasing gold.  On the other hand, some of the business owners pointed out that they people they are hiring would be doing some other type of back-breaking manual labor.  They might also have no job at all.

In any case, I thought it was an interesting glimpse into the world of sweatshop gold farming.  It is also nice that this article is by a big established news agency like the New York Times.
